Woolworths
Maleny Project

Retail giant Woolworths opened their Woolworths
Maleny store in
2005.
Located on the banks of Obi Obi
Creek, the area is home to platypus, turtles, water
dragons and bright azure kingfishers.

As this is such a sensitive project due to the surrounding native habitat, the original
project was subject to stringent environmental conditions.  Part of these conditions
included strict low noise level requirements that needed to be achieved from the
plant and equipment, particularly in the evening.

Since 2005 new technology has allowed the original condenser design to be vastly improved
from a sound and an energy efficiency perspective.  Given equipment life cycles, it was also
timely for new equipment.

Woolworths Maleny Solution

The Solution

Conservation and preservation of the natural surroundings of the store were heavily prevalent in the Woolworths plan for the store.  The HVAC system needed to meet the store requirements for ventilation and airflow, whilst at the same time provide low noise levels and sustainable outcomes for the surrounding area.

Woolworths engaged the original contractor to provide new condensers and a heat pump, and we were engaged to provide two elements to the project.

Element 1:

Our team were to supply and instal transitions between the new condensers to the discharge at the roof line.  This had to be done within a specific and critical time frame, with only a small window of opportunity to measure, manufacture and install.

Thanks to our Project Leader Greg Fryberg and his team, this all went smoothly.  The physical element of this project was completed on time and to our client’s satisfaction.

Element 2:

We were engaged to facilitate sound testing before and after the new condensers were installed.

Working with the original sound engineers to perform this task, we knew they were best able to understand the nuances of this sensitive project as they had designed and built the original attenuation.

Woolworths Maleny The Outcome

The Outcome

Sound tests were performed prior to commencing the project, and on completion.  The sound engineers concluded that Woolworths had again delivered an outstanding engineered solution.  The sound levels inside the rooftop plant room were quieter than the original equipment provided, and had met the brief at four sensitive points on the roofline and beyond the creek.

We are proud to have been involved in this unique project for Woolworths and our team has once again provided solutions that are outside the box for our clients.
